This new, purpose-built two-storey medical centre spans approximately 1,450 square metres and replaces the previous facility on the site. Designed as a healthcare hub, it brings together a range of providers including Green Cross ‘The Doctors’, Your Pharmacy, Habit Health Physiotherapy, and MoleMap — offering a complementary mix of services tailored to meet the needs of the local community. Conveniently located, the centre sits just 250 metres from Bayfair Shopping Centre, about 650 metres from Arataki Beach, and approximately 6.7 kilometres from Mount Maunganui’s CBD.
To minimise disruption during development, the original medical centre remained operational throughout construction of the new facility. Once the new building was completed, the old structure was demolished and replaced with a new permeable-paved car park. The centre has been designed to meet modern medical requirements, incorporating features such as dedicated ambulance access and a separate entry point for COVID-19-related protocols.
Architecturally, the building features solid precast concrete wall panels at ground level that anchor the building and create a sense of solidity, permanence, and security with clean rectilinear forms. These concrete panels are further articulated by cast-in rebates and rough sawn timber textures that contrast with the punctuated glazed shopfront window joinery.
The upper level is defined by its angular roof form that orientates the building towards the beach and the sun. The dynamic roofline and articulated window placement are an abstract interpretation of an ocean wave, with a white fascia evoking the cresting foam of breaking surf. Central full height glazing facing Girven Road clearly marks the main entrance, complemented by a lower canopy for shelter. Glazing on the first floor creates a light filled space for the first floor waiting area. Windows on the upper level feature a custom ceramic frit pattern inspired by skin spots that minimises heat and glare and creates an interesting visual play of light and shadow.
