The Silverdale Centre, at 40 Hibiscus Coast Highway, Rodney, includes 24,000sq m of retail space, anchored by The Warehouse and Countdown supermarket. The site includes basement and ground level parking for more than 980 cars. 34 smaller tenancies complement the two anchor stores, to create a family focused town centre with numerous ‘precincts’ including outlets for fashion, food, homewares, appliances and services such as banks and pharmacy. The area is rich in history, which we’ve studied as part of the planning and design process. Features incorporated into the design showcase Silverdale’s distinctive past. Through use of timber and native plants, we’re bringing the natural environment inside, and large sedimentary rocks known as ‘concretions’ – a feature of the surrounding landscape - have been incorporated into the outdoor areas. Extensive landscaping drawing on the local geology is designed to ensure the development enhances the area. Themes found in the research stage have generated architectural form and create an aesthetic narrative through use of materials, graphics and colour. Selected materials include stained cedar, vitex and accoya timbers, precast concrete panels with varying aggregates and oxides, coloured gum pots representing Kauri gum in the paving, glass canopies with coloured graphics, painted steel, powder coated louvres, Fundermax compressed sheets and selected paving.
