The new four storey building at The Warehouse Ltd Support Centre, located in Northcote, Auckland, was designed to accommodate an additional 200 office staff, associated meeting and training rooms and staff facilities. It is widely recognised that the existing Warehouse Support Centre has outstanding architectural merit and sits comfortably on its site overlooking the motorway and harbour in Northcote; therefore the new extension to The Warehouse Ltd Support Centre has been designed to be harmoniously integrated with the existing building, so as to not have a dominating visual presence. As might be expected, the design approach was to match the architectural style and merit of the existing building whilst achieving modern energy use efficiencies. This was achieved by matching proportion of spandrel depth to window depth, similar parapet profile, utilising matching exterior material types and colour palette, along with deep eaves, glazed exterior screening and adjustable louvres. The new extension features a ‘linea atrium’, as found in the existing building, with a glazed roof along the centre line of the building to draw natural light down through the floor levels below. Bridges spanning this atrium space allows circulation of staff between the two sides of the floor plates, with vertical circulation via the two stairwells and a lift. The top two floors have captured views across the existing building to the city and harbour beyond; while the lower floors look out onto the landscaped gardens and Tuff Crater Reserve.
